ABOUT PAKBENG IN LAOS
Pakbeng is the riverside town where you will overnight during the course of your two-day boat cruise in Northern Laos. Located high on the banks of the Mekong River, Pakeng is halfway between the World Heritage Town of Luang Prabang and Houay Xay, a town on the Northern Lao/Thai boarder. Pakbeng is a small, but bustling village in Oudomxay Province, it is about a 3 hour drive to Oudomxay and only a 1.5 hour drive to the Muang Ngeun border, which is a new border crossing point into Thailand.
Pakbeng’s daily activities are concentrated on the transport and accomodation of goods and passengers traveling on the Mekong. After the morning rush of passengers departs from the banks of Pakbeng, the town slows down significantly into a relaxed and easygoing atmosphere. When evening time comes, activity resumes as guesthouses and restaurants rush to open to welcome the incoming passengers.
During your brief overnight stay in Pakbeng, you will still have time to visit the lively, local morning market with rich and fascinating products, visit two of village’s Buddhist temples, and share memorable experiences with the rural inhabitants of Pakbeng. Who knows, you may even decide to stay an extra day!
